As the Episcopal Church of St. Andrew and Holy Communion begins its 152nd year in South Orange, church members and local history buffs can page through the church’s long past. Donald Thomas, lifelong congregant and South Orange resident, has completed a history of the church, entitled The Episcopal Church(es) of Saint Andrew and Holy Communion, South Orange, NJ, 1859-2009. The book is done and published, just in time for the new year.

Thomas perused vestry minutes dating back to 1859 as part of his research and says he became intrigued by the church’s history when he noticed a pulpit dedicated to the memory of Cornelius Roosevelt. Upon further investigation, he learned that Cornelius was the uncle of Theodore and had a 67-acre estate in present-day Maplewood.

The Episcopal Church(es) of Saint Andrew and Holy Communion, South Orange, NJ, 1859-2009 is available at the church office.
