Sarah Freeman Adds Foliage to the Family Tree

In the December 27, 2010 edition of the Yorkshire Post, Sarah Freeman writes about her quest in search of relatives. She says she met a supposed “aunt” at her father’s funeral about 15 years ago, but had never seen the woman before – nor since, for that matter. Not exactly a close family…

Her article is very interesting, rather lengthy, and entertaining enough to hold my interest to the end.

To wrap up her column, Sarah posts the following list of Top Ten discoveries that new genealogists hope for. No source was given, but the list is a good one. Keep in mind that this is the list of someone from the UK. However, the list isn’t far off from one that might be written by a genealogist in the USA.

  1. A black sheep
  2. A pioneering scientist or engineer
  3. A rags to riches story
  4. A working-class hero
  5. A famous actor or singer
  6. Connections to royalty or aristocracy
  7. An adventurer who sailed the high seas
  8. An acclaimed artist or writer
  9. A famous sportsman or woman
  10. A notorious criminal
