Culpeper [Virginia] Historical Society is Disbanded

After a 40-year run, the Culpeper Historical Society officially became part of history last month.

Local attorney Butch Davies, who was president of the society in 1975 and remained a life member until the end, said it became clear that the CHS was no longer serving its intended purpose.

“It had just reached the point where it wasn’t a functioning entity,” he said.

Further complicating matters, in 2004, the State Corporation Commission terminated the group’s charter for failure to maintain financial filings, as required by law.

So in 2008, Davies, longtime society member Perry Cabot and a handful of others decided it was time to let go. But when the members began to take a closer look at the group’s finances, they found a pleasant surprise —about $65,000 sitting in the bank.

Formed by a few longtime local residents decades ago to record, promote, preserve and celebrate the history of Culpeper’s people, places and happenings, the society had slipped from the scene in recent years as member-ship dwindled.
