Jack Spencer Goodwin Library

Harold Stephens of Swansboro recently presented the History Place with a $100,000 gift to be used for the Jack Spencer Goodwin Research Library.

The money will be set up as an endowment named the Stephens Family Endowment and was given in memory and honor of the Rev. A. P. Stephens and Mary Stephens Stephens and their children L. Harold Stephens, John A. Stephens and the late Worth Stephens and Louise Stephens Nicholson.

The History Place in downtown Morehead City houses a museum, the Jack Spencer Goodwin Research Library, museum store, the Les Ewen Auditorium/Learning Center, a conference room, offices and a tea room and tea shop.

The Jack Spencer Goodwin Research Library serves the museum’s mission by preserving the written history and photographs of Carteret County. The library has more than 8,000 publications; about 100 archival boxes of manuscript material; the archives of several county organizations and an extensive picture file. The collection of material on Carteret County history and genealogy is quite notable and the Civil War collection is generally considered to be the best such collection in eastern North Carolina.
