Substitute Name Lists for the Lost 1890 Federal Census – Part 1: National & Alabama to Missouri

Fire Damage to 1890 Population Census

Prologue: The original 1890 census population schedules (the name lists) were involved in a 1921 fire that took place in the Commerce Building in Washington, DC. Firemen made a decision to contain the fire to the basement floor of the building, the vaulted storage area that held the entire collection of the 1890 federal census originals (the only copy). More of the bound volumes may have been harmed by water damage during the attempts to put out the fire, than were actually burned to ashes. Using today’s preservation methods, over half of the original schedules may have been salvageable, but the technique of freeze-drying water-soaked papers was not available in 1921.  Several years after the fire, Congress permitted the Census Bureau to destroy the damaged remnants. See Picture Source. Of the 1890 population of 62,979,766 people, a total of 6,160 readable names were extracted from the fragments. As a result of this major loss of census information, Family historians must find substitute name lists to fill in the period between 1880 and 1900. To locate the same people whose names were in the lost 1890 schedules, start here:

Start with the 1890 Census Originals & Indexes:

Population Schedules of the Eleventh Census of the United States, 1890. [Microfilm & Digital Capture]. The surviving fragments from the fire contain a few pages each from Perry Co Alabama, the District of Columbia,  Muscogee Co Georgia, McDonough Co Illinois, Wright Co Minnesota, Hudson Co New Jersey, Westchester and Suffolk Co New York, Cleveland and Gaston Co North Carolina, Hamilton Co Ohio, Union Co South Dakota, and Ellis, Hood, Kaufman, Rusk and Trinity Co Texas. The remnants were filmed by the National Archives, 1962, Series M407, 6 rolls, beginning with FHL film #926497. To access the digital images, see the FHL catalog page: https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/231212.

1890 Federal Census – Family Schedule 1 to 10 Persons. This is one of the few surviving original pages, from Perry County, Alabama.

Index to the Eleventh Census of the United States, 1890 [Microfilm Only], from the original records at the National Archives, Washington, DC. The 6,160 names from the surviving 1890 census schedules were indexed and filmed by the National Archives, 1963, 2 rolls, Series M496, FHL has both rolls as FHL film #543341 (A-J) and FHL film #54342 (K-Z). See the FHL catalog page: https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/227543.

1890 Online Images and Index: for Ancestry’s version, see https://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=5445.  For the FamilySearch version, see https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1610551. 1890 Federal Census, Special Schedules of Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans [Microfilm & Digital Capture]. In addition to the main population schedules, a special census listing was extracted from the 1890 census for surviving Union soldiers, sailors, and marines (or their widows), and a portion of that special census survives. This separate listing of veterans/widows was never done before or after the 1890 census. Census losses: Of the forty-nine (49) jurisdictions (states, territories, districts) in place in 1890, sixteen (16) of the Union Veterans Schedules jurisdictions were lost. When the National Archives accessioned the surviving schedules in 1943, they were led to believe that the losses were a result of the same 1921 fire that damaged the population schedules. But upon examination, the National Archives could find no evidence of fire or water damage and did not support that conclusion. The losses were alphabetically from Alabama through Kansas, and about half of the names for Kentucky. Surviving state listings begin with the partial list for Kentucky and are complete from Louisiana through Wyoming. Microfilm: The 1890 Special Schedules Enumerating Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War were microfilmed on 118 rolls, series M123, beginning with FHL film #338160 (Kentucky).  For access to the digital images, see the FHL catalog page: https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/230777.

1890 Special Schedules: Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, and Widows, Etc. Example above from Boone County, Kentucky.

1890 Veterans Online Images and Indexes: Ancestry’s version has 990,276 records, see https://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=8667. The FamilySearch version has 90,497 page images (with about 990,000 indexed names), see www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1877095.

Next, Start Looking for 1890 Substitute Name Lists:

It is now time to find alternative name lists from the period of the lost 1890 census. There are many, many substitute name lists available. There are National Name Lists, and there are Statewide Name Lists (all States & DC). All of the name list databases listed below were extracted from Dollarhide’s 52 State Books, Censuses & Substitute Name Lists (AL to WY, plus DC & US Territories, Family Roots Publishing Co., Orting, WA, 2017-2018). For both the National Name Lists and Statewide Name Lists, the substitutes identified are databases mostly found on the Internet. There remains a wealth of printed and microfilm resources never digitized. Some important 1890 Substitute Name Lists not digitized yet are noted with a link to a FHL catalog page; or a reference to a state Censuses & Substitute Name Lists book, wherein more information is available. A GenealogyBlog article, What Are Name Lists? is available for those who may need an explanation and examples.

MAP NOTES: Idaho Territory, included in the June 1890 Census, became the State of Idaho on 3 July 1890, 3 days after the census was completed. In May 1890, Congress created Oklahoma Territory, reducing the area of the unorganized Indian Territory. The areas of the two territories were merged in 1907 to become the State of Oklahoma. National Name Lists

The following list of databases identifies the main 1890 Census Substitutes available, those covering all or large portions of the United States. Another list begins after this one, with databases specific to each state. The first database listed below is probably the single most important source for finding the names of people living in the U.S. about the time of the 1890 Federal Census:

1890 Census Substitute – Ancestry.com.  Over 45 million records. Source: Ancestry.com compilation. It is possible to scan the entire alpha state/city/county list of 320+ individual databases in this compiled 1890 Census Substitute. This is ancestry’s collection of city directories (and other name lists) published at the time of the lost 1890 federal census. About 95% of the names are within the city directories collections, 1) U.S. City Directories, 1822-1895 ; 2) New England City Directories; and 3) Other City Directories not part of the two major compilation databases. About 5% of the names are from such databases as State Censuses (CO 1885, FL 1885, IA 1895, MI 1894, Riley Co KS 1885, NE 1885 & SD 1895), Farmers Directories, plus Chicago Voter Lists, 1889, 1890, 1891; and Georgia Tax Digests to 1892. A typical search in this database provides the name of any database with hits, then a results list of names and places. As an example, a search for John Dollarhide (exact spelling), brought up 322 hits in U.S. City Directories, 1 hit in 1885 Nebraska State Census, 1 hit in 1890 Veterans Schedule; and 1 hit in Kansas City Missouri Directories, 1890-1891. To start a search, see http://search.ancestry.com/search/group/1890census.

U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995 – Ancestry.com. 1.56 billion records (for the period 1885-1895: about 40 million records). Source: Ancestry.com compilation. Search the entire database for a name, or select a state, city, year to search within a specific directory. Examples: choose Iowa, Des Moines, 1889, 1890, or 1891; or choose Kansas, Wichita, 1889, or 1891; or choose Washington, Seattle, 1889, 1890, or 1891; or choose Georgia, Atlanta, 1889, 1890, or 1891; or choose California, Los Angeles, 1888, 1890, or 1891. See https://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=2469.

New England City Directories, 1890 Census Substitute – Ancestry.com. 63,404 records. Source: NEHGS. This database is a collection of city directories, 1885-1895, from various towns and cities in the six New England states (CT, MA, ME, NH, RI, VT),  see https://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=8852.
