Phyllis McLaughlin Brings Newspaper Career Experience to APG e-News

WESTMINSTER, Colo., 7 November 2012: The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG®) (http://www.apgen.org) announced today that Phyllis McLaughlin has joined the organization as editor of APG’s new monthly newsletter. McLaughlin brings 25 years of experience in writing and newspaper journalism to APG e-News, APG’s recently-launched electronic monthly newsletter.

“We launched APG e-News in response to members’ desire for more communication within the organization,” said Kenyatta D. Berry, president of the Association of Professional Genealogists. “We welcome Phyllis and are excited to leverage her years of expertise in producing this valuable communication tool.”

McLaughlin’s experience in newspaper writing includes community papers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. She has won awards for writing, page design, and photography from the Kentucky Press Association, the Louisville Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and Landmark Community Newspapers, Inc.

McLaughlin got started in genealogical research when an aunt gave her a stack of letters written by her great-grandfather while he served in the U.S. 17th Infantry during the Civil War. She is the founder of Write Away! Online, a genealogy firm aimed at helping people write engaging family histories. “I thank the board for selecting me as editor of the APG electronic newsletter,” said McLaughlin. “I can think of no better opportunity for me, as a newcomer to this profession, than to use my skills as a journalist to serve an organization whose mission is to help genealogists develop professionally.”
