The Canals of New York State

The Canals of New York State is a collection of articles written specifically about the canals and canal system in the state of New York. These articles were collected and assembled by the American Canal Society and the Canal Society of New York State. In all, over 55 articles tell the history of the construction, the repair, the commercial interest, as well as the social and economic impact of the canals on New Yorkers.

The publication includes maps, photographs, and approximately 100 drawings of canals, old and new. Articles present the history and present condition of all major canals with detailed descriptions of the following: the Erie Canal, the Oswego and Champlain Canals, the Delaware and Hudson, the Shenango and Chemung Canals, the Junction Canal, the Gowanas and Mott Haven Canals, and the Shinnecock Canal. Briefly mentions the Genessee Valley and Black River Canals, and the Cayuga and Seneca Canals.

The last page of the book provides a list of 18 “other publications of the American Canal and Transportation Center.”
