Two Books Reviewed: Both Simple and Direct but Completely Different

Abstracts of Obituaries in the Western Christian Advocate 1834–1850 and Lands of the German Empire and Before have nothing in common; except, each is pure in its own simplicity. Each book was compiled to fill a very specific research need. Abstracts of Obituaries provides a listing compiled from obituaries as they appeared in the Western Christian Advocate between 1834 and 1850. Lands of the German Empire shows the changing maps of Germany, from the Ninth Century to modern times. Both books are individually reviewed in the remaining body of this article.

Abstracts of Obituaries in the Western Christian Advocate 1834–1850

The Western Christian Advocate was a Methodist run newspaper. The first edition of the newspaper began on May 2, 1834 in Cincinnati. Shortly following, the publication opened offices in Charlestown, South Carolina; Nashville, Tennessee; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Others offices continued to open throughout the 1840s and 1850s. According to the book, the newspaper during the 1834 to 1850 period was a standard, newspaper size printing of four pages. The paper was distributed through the middle states and contained information predominately of Methodist interest; reaching, a circulation of 18,000 by 1850.

Obituaries listed in the paper were predominately of Methodists. However, people of other faiths did appear in its pages. In all, this book contains the vital statistics derived from approximately 8,000 obituaries. The book is organized by chapter per year. The book also contains a full Name Index and a Geographic Index.

 

Lands of the German Empire and Before

The area we know as Germany today has a sorted past. The individual states that make up the region grew and shrank constantly between 843 and 1871; remaining, predominately independent of each other politically, but closely sharing language and customs. This book looks at the historical events that changed the maps of the region. The book provides a listing of historical events that changed the maps and breaks them down for a state by state examination, as well as a region wide review, complete with simple maps which are easy to read.
