The Pontiac, Illinois Public Library Gets a New Digital Microfilm Reader

The Pontiac [Illinois] Public Library has installed its new microfilm reader, but don’t look for some big, clunky machine — the new model is a sleek, tabletop operation.

Library director Layla Johnston told members of the library board at their meeting Monday that the new microfilm reader had been installed earlier that day.

“We got a very basic tutorial, but I think everyone will be happy with it,” she said of the new digital reader which gives sharper images to pages under review. The new ScanPro reader also offers several magnification options, which are very helpful in looking at older newspapers, which used much smaller type.

Last month, Johnston announced the $8,000 needed for a new reader had been raised and the board approved the purchase of the ScanPro and software.
Although the library’s printer is not connected to the reader, patrons who want copies of pages can bring in a flash drive and download the copies onto a flash drive…
