George Eastman Collections Now Accessible Online

My father worked for Kodak, in Rochester, NY, when he was a young man. He was working there when the 1920 census was taken. And I’ve even found an item in an employee newsletter about my father having joined the Army, and being on his way to Fort Lewis for basic training. This caused me to be fascinated by this announcement made at the eastman.org website. The following is from the site.

More than a quarter of a million objects from the photography, technology, and George Eastman Legacy collections are now searchable online

Rochester, N.Y., October 19, 2016 — The George Eastman Museum has launched a new platform that allows public online access to more than 250,000 objects from its world-class collections at eastman.org/collections-online. Objects from the museum’s photography, technology, and George Eastman Legacy collections are now searchable, and more objects from the museum’s vast holdings are being added on an ongoing basis. Objects from the moving image collection will become accessible in the coming months.

“The George Eastman Museum has a long tradition of making our unparalleled collections—encompassing several million objects in the fields of photography, cinema, and photographic and cinematographic technology, as well as objects related to George Eastman—physically accessible to scholars, curators, and the public through our study centers and library, traveling exhibitions, and object loans,” said Bruce Barnes, Ron and Donna Fielding Director, George Eastman Museum. “Online access to our extensive collections will transform the public’s understanding of our holdings and facilitate new forms of collaboration with creators, curators, scholars, and collectors. Whether you are conducting research on a particular subject or simply interested in seeing what works we have by your favorite photographer, you can now do so much more easily.”

Although not everything in the George Eastman Museum’s collection is available online, more than a quarter of a million objects are currently searchable by artist, collection, classification, and date. New objects from the collection are being added to the database on a weekly basis.

The museum recently announced a grant award of $148,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, to support the cataloging and digitizing of the museum’s Gabriel Cromer collection. Donated to the museum by Eastman Kodak Company, this is one of the seminal collections of early French photography and is considered the most important collection of such materials outside of France. The Gabriel Cromer collection will be fully accessible online by 2019.

“The launch of our online collection database has been truly transformative for the George Eastman Museum, allowing the world access to explore and discover the myriad wonders of our collection, enhancing the museum’s profile, our contribution to scholarship, and our collaborative capabilities,” added Barnes.

New York City Directories – 1786 through 1923 – Going Online

The following teaser is from the New York Public Library blog.

New York City directories waiting to be digitized.
New York City directories waiting to be digitized.

New York Public Library is digitizing its collection of New York City Directories, 1786 through 1922/3, serving them free through the NYPL Digital Collections portal. The first batch—1849/50 through 1923—have already been scanned, and the 1786–1848/9 directories are right now being scanned. The whole collection will be going online over the coming months. Staff at NYPL are currently teaching computers to read the wobbly typeset, to interpret the strange abbreviations, and the occasionally slightly less than geometric layout of the directories to make the old print text machine readable. The goal is to make the directories text searchable in powerful new ways, in order to build datasets that will inform research in New York City history, genealogy, and beyond. More technical posts on this work will follow.

New York City Municipal Archives: An Authorized Guide for Family Historians

The following news release is from NYGBS:

New-York-City-Municipal-Archive_198pw

The publication unlocks key resources for anyone tracing New York City’s vast history to leverage the hundreds of key collections housed at the Municipal Archives.

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYG&B) is pleased to announce the release of New York City Municipal Archives: An Authorized Guide for Family Historians.

The 245-page guide will make research at this vital facility far more approachable and will introduce researchers to many previously-unknown record collections housed there.

As one of the world’s largest repositories of city records, the holdings of the New York City Municipal Archives offer untold resources for those tracing the history of New Yok City and its families. But until now, it has remained difficult for anyone but the most experienced researcher to navigate more than the basics of this essential archive. This new guide, created with the assistance of the New York City Municipal Archives, will make it possible for genealogists, family historians or anyone researching New York City’s vast history to leverage the hundreds of key collections found there.

The guide has already been the recipient of significant praise from the genealogical and archival community, including David S. Ferriero, Archivist of the United States, who stated, “What a gift to genealogists, researchers, and the just plain curious! For the first time a treasure trove of New York City history going back to the Dutch Colonial Era is described to facilitate easy access.”

The publication, which has been in progress for more than two years, is authored by genealogist Aaron Goodwin of New York City. Harry Macy, Jr., FASG, FGBS, is its consulting editor. Support for the publication was provided by Furthermore, a program of the J.M. Kaplan fund and former NYG&B trustee, M. David Sherrill.

Pauline Toole, Commissioner, New York City Department of Records and Information Services noted, “We look forward to welcoming family historians at the Municipal Archives as they explore all the wonderful collections highlighted in the new guide.  This comprehensive resource will be especially useful for our patrons who want to go beyond the basics as they document their New York City roots.”

D. Joshua Taylor, NYG&B President remarked, “The guide provides a look at key records and largely unknown collections that will unlock information and solve mysteries relating to millions of those who at one time called New York City their home.”

Last year the NYG&B released the monumental New York Family History Research Guide and Gazetteer which has quickly become a best-selling “must-have” resource for those tracing New York genealogy and family history. The New York City Municipal Archives: An Authorized Guide for Family Historians is the latest in the organization’s series of research guides, with further topics planned in the future.

The New York City Municipal Archives: An Authorized Guide for Family Historians is available in print for $40 at NewYorkFamilyHistory.org (members of the NYG&B receive a $10 discount and can also purchase an exclusive digital version alongside a paperback copy).

Old Staten Island Newspapers Now Online

The following excerpt is from the June 27, 2016 edition of silive.com:

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Those who believe those “Print is Dead” rumors might want to reconsider.

The oldest Staten Island newspapers, like the Richmond County Advance, are now available at www.NYPL.org/SINewspapers in PDF format. There are more than 250 pages of scanned newspaper articles, going back to the 1890s.

“We are thrilled that this project brings together forward-thinking community partners like the New York Public Library, Staten Island Museum and the Staten Island Advance,” says Ed Wiseman, executive director of Historic Richmond Town. “Through this partnership you can point, click or swipe through thousands of local news pages from anywhere in the world. And the best thing —this trove of ‘current events’ is now totally searchable.”

9 Historic Cannons at Fort William Henry in NY are From a Sunken British Warship

The following teaser is from an article posted in the Arts section of Yahoo.com.

Cannon-at-Fort-William-Henry-300pw

Research has determined nine historic cannons displayed for the past 60 years at a recreated French and Indian War fort in upstate New York were originally aboard a British warship that sank in the Florida Keys in the 18th century, according to an underwater archaeologist who led the project. Joseph Zarzynski, of Wilton, New York, said a study of all 68 cannons at Fort William Henry found that some if not all of the nine iron cannons likely came from HMS Looe, a British warship that sank after hitting a reef in 1744.

Workers Discover 19th Century Burial Vault Under New York City’s Washington Square Park

An unexpected burial vault came to light under the famed Washington Square Park in New York City a few days ago. Once a potter’s field, thousands of folks are buried in the park. Following is a teaser from the November 5, 2015 edition of Newsday.

A large pile of disarticulated human skeletal remains was found under Washington Square Park by workers from a contractor with the New York City Department of Design and Construction, officials said on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015. Photo Credit: NYC Department of Design and Construction
A large pile of disarticulated human skeletal remains was found under Washington Square Park.

Workers upgrading century-old water mains under Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village this week made a surprising and grisly discovery: a burial vault dating back to the 19th century with a large pile of skeletal remains.

The vault, which is about 8 feet deep, 15 feet wide and 20 feet long, contained the remains of more than a dozen people, according to officials of the city’s Department of Design and Construction. A contractor excavated the site, and archaeologists and anthropologists will be working there to gather more information, officials said Wednesday.
