Genealogy Search Leads Australian Woman to Vallejo, California

The following excerpt is from an article written by Rachel Raskin-Zrihen and posted in the July 25, 2014 edition of timesheraldonline.com:

Such was the case with Margery Morrison of Australia, whose climb through her husband’s family tree revealed a Vallejo connection the couple could not have imagined.

The Times-Herald caught up with her during a recent visit to the Mare Island Museum, where she was able to see an exhibit about her husband’s long-lost great granduncle, Willam Halford, one of three Congressional Medal of Honor recipients buried on Mare Island. It was a long and winding road that lead her from Queensland, Australia, to England and eventually, to Vallejo.

It was recently given to the Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site in Hobart.

The Curator Brian Rieusset says it is very detailed.

“It’s got records of 525 people who committed offences here in Tasmania,” said Mr Rieusset.

“What they did, where they went, where they committed the offences, what their sentences were.

Convict Transportation Registers 1787-1870 Database Posted

Australia-Couple

A while back, findmypast published two important convict record sets containing over 500,000 convicts and early settlers. Following is information from MyHeritage about the posting:

The Convict Transportation Registers 1787-1870 database contains original handwritten records and transcripts relating to some 123,000 convicts.

It includes information on convicts’ transportation, listing their ship and year of arrival, as well as some information about their sentencing: when and where they were convicted, and whether their term of transportation was seven years, fourteen years or life. You might just find that this record reveals the vital clue needed to track down your convict ancestors’ whereabouts in the British Isles prior to transportation.

The record of a certain Francis Howard Greenway shows that before becoming Australia’s first eminent architect – credited with the design of Hyde Park Barracks, the Parramatta Female Factory, St James’ Church and many other Sydney buildings – he was sentenced to transportation for 14 years on 23 March 1812.

Convicted in Bristol, Francis Greenway’s record from the Convict Transportation Registers 1787-1870 reveals that he travelled to the new colony on the General Hewett and arrived in 1813.

Another great new resource on findmypast.com is the New South Wales and Tasmania: Settlers and Convicts 1787-1859 dataset, which consists of transcripts, indexes and original handwritten records relating to convicts, former convicts and settlers.

These records contain details of convicts’ and settlers’ year of birth, ship and year of arrival in the colony, occupation and place of residence in the colonies. This invaluable information can help you flesh out the details of your ancestors’ lives in the early colonies.

Pioneers Elizabeth and John Macarthur appear among the New South Wales and Tasmania: Settlers and Convicts 1787-1859 records. Having arrived free in the colony in 1790 aboard the Scarborough, the couple and their family are listed as landholders in Parramatta.

Delve into Australia’s early colonial history and search for your own convict or settler ancestors among these new record sets today!

Queensland’s Births, Deaths & Marriages Registry Goes Online

Queensland, Australia’s Births, Deaths & Marriages registry is now going online, allowing genealogists to download and view files dating back to the late 1800s. Index searches are FREE.

It is planned that by the middle of 2015, all six million records should be posted. There are privacy restrictions for the newer records, but millions of images are quickly accessible for a $20 fee.

In his announcement of the online program in Brisbane on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie pointed to the original 1899 birth extract of Helen Lyndon Goff in Maryborough – a woman who would eventually change her name to PL Travers and write Mary Poppins.

“Queenslanders have a proud history, and now they can access it with just a click of the mouse,” Mr Bleijie said.

Genealogists can search for births which occurred more than 100 years ago; marriages which occurred more than 75 years ago and deaths which occurred more than 30 years ago.

According to the website, records available are:

  • Births—1829–1914
  • Deaths—1829–1983
  • Marriages—1829–1938

Historical Certificates cost $28 (AU) each and Historical Images cost $20 (AU) each.

I did a Birth search for James Jones and got 89 hits. The following is a portion of the results page that I got. Click on the illustration to do your own search of the births, deaths, or marriages.
