New York Public Library and Kirtas Technologies Partner to Make 500,000 Public-Domain Books Available

I just ran across a press release that tells us that the New York Public Library is making a portion of their collection available to the public by way of digitization and distribution through Kirtas Books. Kirtas Books has already proven they can pull this off by making books available from another dozen major libraries. The company does “Digitization of Demand,” charging only $1.95 for the typical book. What caught my eye was that items from NYPL’s genealogy collection is one of those areas being digitized.

Going to the Kirtas Books website, and typing the word Genealogy in the search engine brings back 80 hits. I note that some of the books were on microform. Searching on surnames brings back numerous hits – dependent on the name. Searching on the name, Canfield, I did find some genealogies available for “digitize on demand,” at a cost of only $1.95. A really good deal.

UPDATE (Oct. 2, 2009): Read the comment made by Todd Whiting at Kirtas Books at the end of this blog. They are looking for collections to digitize and could use our help. VERY INTERESTING!

The following details on “Digitize on Demand” is from the KirtasBooks website.

Imagine that YOU had the power, at YOUR fingertips, to select a book from a rare or special collection (or nypl-digital-books any public-domain out-of-print book) and have it digitized, printed, and sent directly to you.

Library collections may contain hundreds, thousands, or in some cases, millions, of books.

The following takes place when a book is available for digitization and you purchase a printed copy of that book:

  • The book is pulled from the library’s shelf by a librarian
  • The book is scanned in a non-destructive manner and returned to the shelf
  • The scanned images are cleaned up
  • Background is removed (yellowing, speckles, tears, etc.)
  • The text is centered both horizontally and vertically
  • The contrast is adjusted for printing a like-new copy
  • A print-on-demand version of the book is created
  • The text is OCRed (Optical Character Recognition)
  • A searchable document is created for online viewing and download
  • The print-on-demand book is sent to a printer for just-in-time printing
  • The newly printed book is shipped to you

This process may take between 1 to 3 weeks depending on the availability of the book. From that point forward, the book is available for immediate download and 3-5 day printing.

The following press release gives details of the agreement between New York Public Library and Kirtas Books:

Using existing information from NYPL’s catalog records, Kirtas will make the library’s public domain books available for sale through www.kirtasbooks.com before they are ever digitized. What makes this approach to digitization unique is that NYPL incurs no up-front printing, production or storage costs. And unlike some digitization programs, the library retains the rights and ownership to their own digitized content.

Rochester, NY (PRWEB) October 1, 2009 – Readers and researchers looking for hard-to-find books now have the opportunity to dip into the collections of one of the world’s most comprehensive libraries to purchase digitized copies of public domain titles. Through their Digitize-on-Demand program, Kirtas Technologies has partnered with The New York Public Library to make 500,000 public domain works from the Library’s collections available (to anyone in the world).

“New technology has allowed the Library to greatly expand access to its collections,” said Paul LeClerc, President of The New York Public Library. “Now, for the first time, library users are able to order copies of specific items from our vast public domain collections that are useful to them. Additionally the program creates a digital legacy for future users of the same item and a revenue stream to support our operations. We are very pleased to participate in a program that is so beneficial to everyone involved.”

We’re honored to be partnering with them to help make their collections available to the world. Using existing information from NYPL’s catalog records, Kirtas will make the library’s public domain books available for sale through its retail site before they are ever digitized. Customers can search for a desired title on http://www.kirtasbooks.com and place an order for that book. When the order is placed, only then is it pulled from the shelf, digitized and made available as a high-quality reprint or digital file.
What makes this approach to digitization unique is that NYPL incurs no up-front printing, production or storage costs. It also provides the library with a self-funding, commercial model helping it to sustain its digitization programs in the future. Unlike other free or low-cost digitization programs, the library retains the rights and ownership to their own digitized content.

Whether patrons are looking for a title about a president–such as, “Memories of President Lincoln,” by Walt Whitman–or by a president–“African Game Trails; An account of the African wanderings of an American hunter-naturalist,” by Theodore Roosevelt–The New York Public Library is the place to turn. Collections available on http://www.kirtasbooks.com are from NYPL’s General Research Division and include books from the local and U.S. history, genealogy, humanities and social sciences collections. Titles include several 19th century cookbooks, a first print edition of “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Thayer, “The Origin of the Werewolf Superstition” (1909) by Caroline Taylor, and first edition version of Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick” from 1851.

“The New York Public Library is an iconic institution that represents strength, history and knowledge,” said Kirtas Founder and CEO Lotfi Belkhir. “We’re honored to be partnering with them to help make their collections available to the world.”

Kirtas currently has 13 partnerships with universities and public libraries to make special collections available for sale online. Virtually any library with a modern records database and valuable collections can participate in the Digitize on Demand program.
