Thoughts on the National Genealogical Society

I’ve been attending conferences sponsored by the National Genealogical Society since 1985. I’ve missed a couple, including the Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, conference held sometime in the 1990s (That was way back in the 20th century).

My first immersion in NGS activities was in 1982, when I had the opportunity to attend the final 2-week National Institute on Genealogical Research. (THe NIGR continues today, but is no longer sponsored by the National Archives, although it has their strong support.) One evening, the National Genealogical Society hosted a reception for attendees at their library, and I, along with several dozen other folks spent some time getting to visit with Milton Rubincam, John Coddington, et al…

The National Genealogical Society has played a key role in my personal research for many years. I’ve been a member since the early 1980s, and have had the opportunity to learn sooo much. Of personal interest is the NGS Quarterly, which I always look forward to. And as I mentioned in the first paragraph, I always attempt to get to the conferences. I find it difficult to personally get to the classes, as I hang out in the exhibit hall a lot. But – I never go home without learning much more about how to better find my ancestors.
