Cemetery Vandalism in Attleboro, Massachusetts

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Dozens of gravestones at the Kirk Yard Burial Ground at 2nd Congregational church have been vandalized over the last two weeks. Many are toppled over and broken from their bases.

The Most Rev. Vernon Wright told NBC 10 he addressed the crime in his sermon Sunday morning saying, “We’re going to do a better job of trying to proclaim who we are to the community and welcome people into our church.”

The site is considered historical with many of the gravestones dating back to the early 19th century.

Wright says since the initial spate of vandalism that damaged 53 stones, another four or five were hit last week. The cost to repair is upwards of $25,000, and that doesn’t include improvements to make the burial ground more secure.
