Help Us Publish More Free Records Online
Searchable historical records are made available on FamilySearch.org through the help of thousands of online volunteers worldwide. These volunteers transcribe (or index) information from digital copies of handwritten records to make them easily searchable online. More volunteers are always needed (particularly those who can read foreign languages) to keep pace with the large number of digital images being published weekly online on FamilySearch.org. Learn how you can volunteer to help provide free access to the world’s historical genealogical records online at FamilySearch.org/Indexing.

Ohio’s German Heritage – 15% off Thru July 23, 2015

Germans make up the second largest ethnic group in the United States, second only to the English. Over the years, groups of Germans migrated in waves, the first wave coming during the colonial period. German influence and settlements spread from the colonies outward. Ohio’s German Heritage looks at the influence of German immigrants in the area that now comprises Ohio.

The book provided an historical brief on Germans in Ohio through the following five time periods:

  • The colonial period, or time prior to the American Revolution
  • The New Republic; until 1830
  • The mass migration and settlement period; from 1831 to World War I
  • The world wars period
  • The ethnic period; the later 20th century

In addition to the history provided in each chapter, there is also a list of other readings and relevant materials the reader can choose to find and read on their own.

New Akron, Ohio Photo Archive – Free For the Public’s Use

The following teaser is from Ohio.com:

An online treasure trove of photographs of Akron is now available — for free use by anyone — thanks to local photographer Shane Wynn and two nonprofits who work to give the city a boost.

Wynn spent more than 40 hours last year taking the shots, capturing more than 1,400 images of the city, including wide-angle photos taken from the tops of parking decks and a ladder.

These are beauty shots, showcasing Akron’s downtown and other parts of the city.

The archive, supported by the Downtown Akron Partnership and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is open to any organization, business or individual at www.Akronstock.com.

Riverside Cemetery in Maumee, Ohio, Devastated By Huge Chunks of Ice

Riverside-Cemetery-Maumee-Ohio-with-Ice-200pw

The Riverside Cemetery, in Maumee, Ohio is being devastated by large chunks of ice that have broken up along the Maumee River in Northern Ohio. The cemetery lies low near the river, and the ice has knocked over Civil War-era monuments, as well as causing all kinds of other damage. Some of the ice blocks are the size of small cars. It looks like about 90% off the headstones are down!
