Photos of Delaware’s Jackson & Sharp Company Trains Being Exhibited & Planned to Go Online at the Delaware Public Archives Website.

The following excerpt is from the January 4, 2011 edition of the Milford Beacon:

Dover, Del. — From Hawaii to Germany to Delaware, railroad enthusiasts everywhere clamor for Woodcut from the 1879 Car Builder’s Dictionary. From: http://www.midcontinent.org/rollingstock/builders/jacksonsharp1.htmphotos of Jackson and Sharp Company trains. The Delaware Public Archives is the keeper of 4,000 of those images, drawings and documents, and is putting a chunk of them on display from Wednesday, Jan. 5, to Saturday, Jan. 8. Soon after that, those images also will be on the Archives’ website, so those far away can get a close-up look.

Jackson and Sharp operated in Wilmington from 1863 to 1950, building railroad cars for operations around the globe. Once the railroad business started going south, they specialized in ships to broaden their reach.

Images from the Jackson and Sharp collection get a lot of requests, said Tom Summers, manager, outreach services.

“We’ve had train enthusiasts from as far away as California and Hawaii request this collection,” he said.

The Archives is in the process of making the files digital and posting them online. It’s a time-consuming process that Summers said is coming to a close.

Summers and photo archivist Randy Goss said putting the collection online is one way of sharing the collection.

Finding 1861–1869 Names of Residents & Civil War Soldiers – Part Two – Alabama through the District of Columbia
    By William Dollarhide

This column is part two of a series.
PART ONE can be found here.

cwbattle1-1 Between the 1860 and 1870 federal censuses, there were state censuses, statewide tax lists, military lists, and other statewide name lists produced for Union and Confederate states, including territories and states created during the Civil War.

Post-Civil War Pension Records for the confederate soldiers were also a function of the individual states, rather than the U.S. federal government.

This review is presented in alphabetical order for all participating states and territories of the Civil War era, and identifies for each the following resources:

    Online Resources:
    ● The State Archives and/or the State Library Website; and any Civil War related databases available online at that Website.
    ● Any Civil War Website for a state.
    ● Any 1861-1869 online database for a state.

    Published Resources:
    ● Any published Compiled Service Records, Militia Lists, Pension Records, or Veteran Records specific to the state.
    ● Any statewide name lists 1861-1869, including State Censuses, Tax Lists, or Voter Registration Lists.

Resident veterans of the confederate army in Alabama were eligible for a state pension under certain conditions. Upon approval of the pension applications, the state auditor prepared an alphabetical record by county of all pensioners. Each probate judge received a copy of his county’s pension record. Information provided in the 1907 series includes the pensioner’s full name, present address, birth date and place, rank and date of entry into military service, name and letter of company and regiment, and date and place of discharge or separation. Re-enlistment information is also given, if any. The 1921 series is a questionnaire returned by confederate pensioners concerning military and personal histories. Personal information reported on includes pensioner’s name, place and date of birth, length of Alabama residency, wife’s age and place of birth, marriage date and place, lists of living children, place of residency, occupation. The 1921 series is arranged numerically and alphabetically by military unit, there under alphabetically by pensioner’s name. Military units are filed in the following sequence: infantry, cavalry, navy, coast guard, marines, artillery, out-of-state commands. Researchers can determine a pensioner’s military unit by referring to the Confederate Pension Applications, which are arranged alphabetically by pensioner’s name.
