DE & MD Genealogy Publications Donated to the Lewes Public Library

The following teaser is from the February 16, 2013 edition of CapeGazette.com:

Lewes, Delaware: Through a cooperative arrangement between the Sussex County Genealogical Society and the Lewes Public Library, more than 50 new titles on the history and genealogy of Sussex County and Delaware have been added to the library’s Delaware Collection for the benefit of local researchers.

The books were donated to the Genealogical Society by member Willard Saunders, and the society approached the library for help in making the collection available to the public. “Working with Sussex County libraries is an important part of the educational mission of the society,” said society President Diann Sherwin, “and we are eager to strengthen our relationship with the Lewes library.”

American Population Before the Federal Census of 1790

American Population Before the Federal Census of 1790 represents an exhaustive research project to extract population data for the area encompassed by the  United State as represented in 1790. Data was gathered from previous research studies, government studies, and independent research. The population lists, which are of paramount importance to the genealogist, include poll lists, tax lists, taxables, militia lists, and censuses, and were originally drawn up for purposes of taxation and local defense. Gleaned from archives in Britain and the U.S. and from a wide range of published sources, their itemization in this work puts colonial population records, and those other areas covered in this book, in a handy framework for research.

The author acknowledges that some of the statics may have greater value than others, based predominately on the source. Some statistics are little more than official estimates. Though some sources contain estimates, every effort was made to verify statics for accuracy. Many estimates by secondary authorities were omitted to limit the introduction of unnecessary bias. There are plenty of accurate counts as well. To help the reader appraise the value of various counts, the specific source is indicated for each item.

Reading these population counts is like reading history by the numbers. Seeing how different areas grew and at what rates gains perspective when compared to the first federal census of 1790 and, perhaps even more so when compared to today’s population counts in the same areas. Such information is both insightful as it is simply interesting.

The 1940 U.S. Census Community Project has Indexed and Posted the 1940 Census for Delaware, Colorado, Kansas, Oregon, Virginia & New Hampshire

The most exciting news from the National Genealogical Society Conference in Cincinnati is that volunteers have now indexed over 30% of the 1940 U.S. Federal Census of 3.8 million records in just 37 days. Six states have now gone through the finalizing process (which takes about a week) with Oregon and Virginia going online on Wednesday. As of this moment Delaware, Colorado, Kansas, Oregon, Virginia and New Hampshire are now fully indexed and posted online at Archives.com, FindMyPast.com, National Archives, ProQuest, and FamilySearch.org.

Lucky for me… I just happened to have all kinds of family living in Oregon, Colorado, and Virginia in 1940. This is all very exciting for me. Thanks to over 100,000 volunteers, my family history is expanding rapidly.

I did not know specifically where my father lived in Oregon in 1940 until today. With my grandson, Nicholas, in one arm I stopped by the FamilySearch.org booth at the NGS Conference and did a quick check of the index for the 1940 Oregon census. I found him instantly. I’d known that he lived in the same home with his sister and niece. However, I didn’t know or I’d forgotten that my twice-widowed grandmother, Nellie, also lived with them. One tiny tidbit that I found fascinating was that Dad (Theodore Meitzler) was farming, and rented their home for $5 a month. He married my mother to following January 1 (1941).

The following News Release gives more details:

SALT LAKE CITY, May 09, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — The 1940 U.S. Census Community Project announced today the availability of a free, searchable index of 1940 U.S. census records for six U.S. states, including Delaware, Colorado, Kansas, Oregon, Virginia and New Hampshire. Records for these states are now searchable by name, location and family relations thanks to the efforts of more than 100,000 volunteers nationwide.

“For the past month, Community Project partners have worked to establish the first free, searchable database of 1940 U.S. census records made possible entirely through the hard work of volunteers,” said Josh Taylor, spokesperson for the 1940 U.S. Census Community Project. “We’re proud to bring easily searchable 1940 U.S. census records for Delaware, Colorado, Kansas, Oregon, Virginia and New Hampshire online for people to learn about their ancestors and life and times in these states more than 72 years ago.”

Since April 2, Community Project volunteers have indexed more than 45 million records and this number continues to grow quickly as more than 10,000 volunteers sign up each week. Those interested in lending a hand can learn more and sign up to be an official 1940 U.S. census volunteer indexer at the 1940 census website (the1940census.com). The project will release searchable records for individual states on an ongoing basis with an aim to make the entire 1940 U.S. census searchable by the end of 2012.

The 1940 U.S. Census Community Project is a joint initiative between the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Archives.com, FamilySearch.org, findmypast.com, ProQuest and other leading genealogy organizations. Thanks to advancements in technology and to volunteers nationwide, Project partners and volunteers can lend a voice to countless untold stories of their ancestors living, working and persevering as the “Greatest Generation.”

“When you index U.S. census records, what you’re essentially doing is stepping back in time and walking in the shoes of the enumerator some 72 years prior,” said Megan Smolenyak, spokesperson for the 1940 U.S. Census Community Project. “The indexing experience is much like walking down a street, ringing doorbells and learning about a specific neighborhood in 1940. Only now, volunteers can explore these fascinating records from the comfort of our own homes.”

About the 1940 U.S. Census Community Project (the1940census.com)
The 1940 U.S. Census Community Project is a web-based, national service project with the goal of creating as soon as possible a free, high quality online index linked to the complete set of census images. The index will allow the public to easily search every person found in the census and view digital images of the original census pages. The collection will be available online for free to the general public at 1940census.archives.gov, Archives.com, FamilySearch.org, findmypast.com and by ProQuest.com through public libraries. All of these organizations are respective website sponsors of the community project. Archives.com, findmypast.com, and ProQuest will make substantial financial contributions to make the 1940 U.S. census online name index possible and will work with the nonprofit organization FamilySearch to bring additional new historic records collections online–making even more highly valued family history resources available to the entire genealogical community.

Ancestry Has Finished the Indexing of the 1940 Delaware & Nevada Censuses

The following was received from Mathew Deighton at Ancestry.com this afternoon:

Ancestry.com is proud to announce the first indexed states of the 1940 U.S. Census are now ready for searching. After 72 years being held from public view, the Nevada and Delaware 1940 Census is now available and searchable for free on Ancestry.com. While the remainder of the U.S. states are digitized and available for viewing, Delaware and Nevada can now be easily searched by name, opening a window into the time of the great depression and WWII. Information that can be found in this recently released census includes: name, address, value of home, occupation and employment status, income in 1939, education, marriage information and much more.

We are also in the final stage of uploading all 3.8 million images from the 1940 Census and that is slated to be completed by tomorrow morning (April 6). What’s more, to complement the launch of the 1940 Census, Ancestry.com is by providing free access to 1 billion hand-selected records from the 1940’s era through April 10.

FamilySearch Adds Indexing Projects for Paraguay, Panama, Bolivia, and Slovakia – Indexers Needed!

The following news release was received from FamilySearch.org:

10 New Digital Images of Historic Documents Created Every Second – Indexing Projects Added for Paraguay, Panama, Bolivia, and Slovakia!

Since 2006, FamilySearch has dramatically improved its ability to scan and convert microfilmed records into digital images. In addition, more than 185 digital camera crews are now at work throughout the world, capturing images six days a week. Between microfilm digital conversions and new field captures, FamilySearch now creates an average of 10 new digital images every second of every day and publishes them at familysearch.org within a matter of weeks. All those new digital images means there’s a dramatic increase in the need for online volunteer indexers and arbitrators!

In the last month, projects from Paraguay, Panama, Bolivia, and Slovakia have been added as new indexing projects. This is the first time projects from these countries have been available for indexing. See the lists below for the newest additions and status of other projects.

You and your family, friends, and colleagues can help make the world’s historical records searchable online. Visit https://indexing.familysearch.org to learn more about FamilySearch indexing and download the free software. Old Drawyer’s Presbyteran Church & Cemetery in Odessa, Delaware Celebrates 300 Years

The following excerpt is from an article published in the April 26, 2011 edition of the Middletown Transcript.

Odessa, Delaware: With spring in full swing and June just around the corner, the Friends of Old Drawyers are hard at work preparing for one of the most prominent religious services in the area.

On the first Sunday of June each year, members of the community, local constituents and area historians gather on the grounds of Old Drawyer’s Presbyteran Church and Cemetery in Odessa to pay homage to the church’s rich history. The tradition will continue as the church celebrates its 300th anniversary Sunday, June 5, at 2 p.m.

“Anybody who has an interest in local or regional history or church history will enjoy this service,” said Doug Bennett, president of the Friends of Old Drawyer’s, which has restored and maintained the property since 1895. “The physical number of community and state leaders who have passed through these doors is very significant to the history of this area.”

Founded in 1711, the church’s original log structure was eventually replaced by the current early American colonial building in 1773 during the American Revolution. When the congregation split in 1865, the church fell into disrepair until the Friends of Old Drawyers took it over, Bennett said.
