Austrian Genealogy Research at FamilySearch.org

I haven’t seen a whole lot available in book form on doing Austrian genealogy research. The Handy Guide to Austrian Genealogical Records by Dagmar Senekovic went out of print years ago. However, the researcher looking for information on their Austrian ancestors can now find a wealth of information online. Following are a few important links to Austrian online data now found at FamilySearch.org:

Austria Births and Baptisms, 1651-1940 – Index to selected Austria births and baptisms. Only a few localities are included and the time period varies by locality. 298,098 records after 27 April 2010

Austria Burials, 1768 – 1918 – Index to selected Austria burials. Only a few localities are included and the time period varies by locality. 31,756 records as of 27 April 2010

Austria Marriages, 1722 – 1898 – Index to selected Austria marriages. Only a few localities are included and the time period varies by locality. 25,383 records after 27 April 2010

Austria, Oberösterreich, Catholic Church Records, 1581-1910Imaged Records – Images of Roman Catholic Church records and indexes from the province of Oberösterreich (Upper Austria), Austria. 516,424 images as of 17 March 2011 – Original images are housed at the Oberösterreichischen Landesarchiv, Anzengruberstrasse 19, 4021 Linz.

Austria, Upper Austria Seignorial Records, 1537-1888Imaged Records – This collection includes a variety of feudal land records from numerous jurisdictions generally within the state of Upper Austria. This collection is being published as images become available – 116,183 images as of 14 July 2011

Austria, Vienna Population Cards, 1850-1895Imaged Records – Population Registers for individual residents of the city of Vienna, Austria. The cards include name, birth date and place, marital status, old and new places of residence, dates of arrival and departure. Occasionally the name of spouse and children are listed. Most records range from 1890 to 1895. Many people from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Eastern Europe passed through Vienna and are included on these cards. The broader collection includes content through 1928, however, the current publication only includes content through 1895. This publication is being produced in cooperation with the Vienna City and Provincial Archives – 54,980 records and 55,821 images as of 2 May 2011

Austria, Wien, Evangelical-Lutheran Church Records, 1848-1900Imaged Records – Church book duplicates from the Evangelische Kirche Augsburgischen Bekenntnisses in Österreich (Evangelical-Lutheran Church of the Augsburg Confession in Austria). 42,522 images as a 17 March 2011. The original duplicate books are found at the Kirchenamt der Evangelischen Kirche A.B. in Österreich, Severin-Schreiber-Gasse 3, 1180 Wien.

Otto von Habsburg, Pretender to the Defunct Thrones of Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and Bohemia, Dead at 98

The following teaser about the death of Otto von Habsburg is from an article in the July 4, 2011 edition of UTV News.

Otto von Habsburg, who has died aged 98, bore the oldest and most eminent dynastic name in European history and could, according to genealogists, trace his ancestryback to the sixth century. The pretender to the defunct thrones of Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic), he pursued a democratic postwar career as a member of the European parliament and a fervent advocate of European union.

Spending time in German diplomatic and political circles, as I once did as a correspondent, you meet men who introduce themselves in the formal German manner – a brief bow from the shoulders followed by an unadorned name straight out of Germanic history. But I never quite got used to shaking hands with a stranger who flatly introduced himself as “Bismarck” (diplomat), “Hannover” (banker) or “Rommel” (mayor of Stuttgart). Or indeed “Habsburg”, whom I met briefly at a party conference in Munich.

Franz Joseph Otto Robert Maria Anton Karl Max Heinrich Sixtus Xavier Felix Renatus Ludwig Gaetan Pius Ignatius von Habsburg was born at Reichenau an der Rax, Lower Austria. His father, Charles, would become Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. Otto’s mother was Zita of Bourbon-Parma. His great-uncle, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination in 1914 would trigger the first world war, stood in for Otto’s ancient godfather, the Emperor Franz Joseph, at his christening. Otto’s father succeeded Franz Joseph in 1916, whereupon Otto became crown prince.

Otto von Bismarck had excluded Austria-Hungary from his united Germany of 1871 because of its large and diffuse non-German population. After 1918, it duly broke up into independent states including Czechoslovakia and Hungary. The rump of ethnically German Austria became a republic too. Charles went into exile with his family that year, and they later moved to the Basque country, Belgium and France. In 1919 Austria finally dispossessed the Habsburgs, although they kept their private fortune. Charles died in Madeira in 1922, whereupon Otto became head of the house of Habsburg, the titular Duke of Lorraine and pretender to four thrones, at the age of nine.

Google to Digitize the Austrian National Library’s Old Books

Google has now made agreements with the Austria National Library to digitize their 400,000 out-of-copyright books. This should be of significant help to those of us doing European research. Very exciting! Following is a teaser from the article found at “The Economic Tmes.”

Austria National Library

VIENNA: Austria’s national library said on Tuesday it has struck a 30-million-euro deal with US Internet giant Google to digitise 400,000 copyright-free books, a vast collection spanning 400 years of European history.

Johanna Rachinger, the head of the ONB library, hailed what she called an “important step,” arguing at a news conference that “there are few projects on such a scale elsewhere in Europe.”

The Austrian library project concerns one of the world’s five biggest collections of 16th- to 19th-century literature, totalling some 120 million pages, the ONB said in a statement.

Scanning work is to begin in 2011 in Bavaria in southern Germany, and is expected to last around six years.

Google will not have exclusive use of the scanned books, which will be accessible on the ONB’s website www.onb.ac.at, the Google Books library at books.google.fr and its European counterpart www.europeana.eu, Rachinger said.

Surname Distribution Maps for the USA, Canada, Spain, France, Germany, Austria & Switzerland on dynastree.com

The following news release was written by dynastree.com staff.

Meitzler surname distribution

Hamburg, August 11, 2009 – The family network dynastree.com features maps for showing the distribution of one’s surname for eight countries at the moment. Such maps are not only available for the US, and Canada, but also for Spain, France, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Versions for the United Kingdom, Netherlands and Argentina will follow soon.

The free map service, which shows the absolute and relative distribution of surnames for the respective countries, is based on data from telephone books and address databases. One can very easily and quickly get an overview of the geographical distribution and origin of one’s own surname. The name of interest only has to be entered into a search field to view the corresponding map. Statistics about the number of persons with the same name are shown for single counties or regions. The relative display of the distribution also factors in the distortion caused by metropolitan areas.

These maps are a helpful service and very popular among the users, it is especially used to narrow down research of one’s own family history to single regions.

The results can be used to research the origin of a name, and to find further trails of the family’s history. If the name searched for is not limited to one country, the user is notified and can also use the international maps for displaying the name’s distribution there. This is useful to track down ancestors or relatives if the family emigrated from a country decades or centuries ago. The name “Jackson” for instance is found only about 1,000 times, while there are about 640,000 entries in the US. It is therefore on the 18th rank of the most frequent surnames in the US.

The surname distribution maps can also be integrated into blogs created with WordPress, dynastree.com offers such a widget. It only takes some minutes to let the visitors of one’s blog access the maps. The widget also automatically recognizes the visitors’ language settings and shows the corresponding map in the right language.

Profile of dynastree.com
According to experts, dynastree.com and its international language versions have been among the fastest growing social networks worldwide in the last two years. By now, more than nine million families have created their tree at dynastree.com, and more than 15.000 new family trees are added each day. The venture capital corporations Neuhaus Partners and Hasso Plattner (co-founder of SAP) Ventures recognized the young start-up’s potential early and support dynastree.com as investors.

Dynastree.com was founded by the experienced internet entrepreneurs Daniel Grözinger and Sven Schmidt. They have already founded and maintained several internet projects since studying together, such as getgo.de (an online ticketing service), and the FIFA Soccer World Cup Ticketing Center (responsible for managing the ticketing for the FIFA Soccer World Cup in Germany in 2006).

I did a USA search on the surname of Meitzler – with the results found at: http://www.dynastree.com/maps/detail/meitzler.html The data is based on phone directory entries. I noted that no Meitzlers were listed for Utah, although I know of at least 8 of us living here, in 3 households. However, we all use cellphones – or Comcast cable phone services, thus not showing up in the typical “phone directories.” I was offered the Surname Distribution Maps for the USA upon logout. Previous to that I couldn’t find them. Because the website is currently set up to automatically default to the user’s language, there isn’t a simple system within the site to go to one of the foreign sites currently posted. However, the direct links are as follows:

Thanks to Nils Schnelle for getting me the direct website addresses for the above sites. Note that the initial news release stated that Surname Distribution Maps for the UK were also available. This was a mistake. They aren’t posted at the site at this time.
