Forty-Nine Digital Newspapers Now Available from the British Library

british-newspapers The British Library, in affiliation with Gale (now owned by GENGAGE Learning) has made digital editions of forty-nine 19th-century British newspapers now available online. According to their press release, “every front page, editorial, birth and death notice, advertisement and classified ad that appeared within the pages of the selected papers is easily accessible from what is a virtual chronicle of history for this period.” In addition, users of the database can search every word on every page.

Searches are free. Access is a bit spendy, but if you’ve found someone who looks to be your ancestor, you could say that the the cost is cheap. Fees are £6.99 ($11.14 as of 9/25/09) for a 24-hour pass, allowing the user to view up to 100 articles, or a seven-day pass with 200 article views for £9.99 ($15.91 as of 9/25/09).

I like the search engine and the search results are kinda’ cool. I searched on the name, Canfield, and got 824 hits.

You may also view complete articles from the Penny Illustrated Paper and The Graphic free of charge. I played around with those papers a bit, and found that I could search them and look at the results without even having to register. Just choose those titles to search. You’ll see that they are marked as FREE when you get the search results. The files open right up. Cool…
