Arline Mills School Census: Dist 117 – Pierce Co, WA – 1 May 1913

The following Images are from the original completed census form for Pierce County School District No. 117, Arline Mills, taken 1 May 1913. This form, along with a number of other Arline School documents was found in a satchel on the Fred Keating farm about 1975 or so, and are now located in the Meitzler Personal Research Library, Bountiful, Utah. Note that the form is two-sided 8.4 x 14. However, in order to make it easier to scan, display, and read online, I posted the form in four illustrations – two from each side. I have the school census records from 1911 through 1917, with 1916 missing, and plan to post them all – one year at a time.

Names of Parents or Guardians – Names of Children – Date of Birth (month & day) – No. of Weeks Child Has Attended School During School Year – Date of Birth (Year) – Sex – Postoffice Address – Signature of Parent of Guardian. Note that in a number of cases, a line is used for Weeks in School. I believe this to mean “not given.” Where this occurs, I am transcribing it as ng for “not given.” Also note that the person who took this census accidentally put the “weeks in school” in the wrong column, and realizing the error, retitled the heading and kept this same format to the bottom of the page.

  1. In Mississippi these are called “Educable Children Lists.” The local schools compiled a listed of ALL children from the ages of about 5 or 6 through age 20. These records can be found in the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. In addition to their genealogical value, they can be used as substitutes for a birth certificate (in the rare instance when a birth didn’t get recorded).

  2. My name is Montana (Payne) Holt…My mother was Arline Marie Thompson and she was born in Arline Mills….Feb, 21, 1912. I was born in Raymond ,Washington August 3, 1946.

My grandfather was Joseph Bernard Thompson b. 1888 and my Grandmother was Minnie Welthy Flory b. 1885

Their Children were Joseph, Arline and Rose Thompson, and my Great-granparents were the Carner Family. Great-grandmother was Emma Welthy Carner; Great-grandfather was Charles Henry Flory.

Can anyone share with me their knowledge of my fmaily?

    Regards, Montana Holt

  3. How do I get copies of the Arline Mills School Census? Andrew Chopic was my grandfather.
