A conference on the history, people and culture of New York will draw hundreds of historians, librarians, archivists and more to SUNY Plattsburgh June 4-6.
The 30th annual Conference on New York State History, sponsored by the New York State Historical Association and the New York State Archives Partnership Trust, will include more than 30 sessions on topics ranging from first peoples to 20th century New York.
While there is a charge to registrants of the conference, two evening lectures will be free and open to the public. On June 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Yokum Lecture Hall, Dr. Christopher Kirkey, director of the Center for the Study of Canada, will moderate “Continental Engagement: U.S.-Canadia Relationships, 1609 to the Present.” Presenters include Donald Fyson of Lavalle University in Quebec City, Quebec; Andrew Holman of Bridgewater State College, Bridgewater, Mass.; Jarrett Rudy of McGill University in Montreal; and Brett Rushforth of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
On June 5 at 8 p.m. in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Hackett Fischer, the Earl Warren professor of history at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., will deliver the Wendell Tripp lecture, “A Frenchman in New York: Champlain Among the Mohawk in 1609.” The program, based upon his work, “Champlain’s Dream,” will be preceded by a sneak preview of “Dead Reckoning: Champlain in America,” a one-hour television documentary on Champlain being produced by Mountain Lake PBS.
This marks the first time New York’s premier statewide historical gathering has been held in the North Country since 1976. SUNY Plattsburgh was selected to recognize the importance of Lake Champlain during the 400th year since the voyage of Samuel de Champlain on the waters that now bear his name.
