Irene May Willkens was born on May 8, 1924, at her grandparents’ home in Amherst. She was the only child of John William “Bill” and Pauline K. (Herrmann) Willkens. She graduated from Amherst High School in 1940 and was a lifelong resident of Buffalo County…
She attended the Evangelical Free Church in Kearney. She and her husband were members of camping clubs and often included their grandchildren in their travels. Irene also belonged to the Miller Seniors, the neighborhood Bible study group, the Fort Kearny Genealogical Society and the Buffalo County Historical Society, and was a charter member of the State Genealogical Society.
