The 1940 Federal Census has been digitized and will soon be available to the public. The date set for public access is 2 April 2012. Well known research sites like Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org will most likely have the census available on that very day. However, another free resource, sometimes overlooked, will make the census available to researchers. The National Archives has created a site just for the 1940 census. The site will official open on April 2. In the meantime, the site’s homepage offers a brief video about the census and the digitization process.

The National Archives is the agency that will release the 1940 Census on April 2. It will appear on that website at 9:00 am Eastern Time. Ancestry and Family Search will have to obtain it from NARA and then publish it, and that might not happen on April 2.
