400 British & Australian Fallen on French Battlefield to be Exhumed & Reburied

Remains of around 400 British and Australian soldiers from the World War One are to be exhumed from a French battlefield and individually buried, it was announced yesterday.

The excavation of six mass graves in Fromelles will begin in May after the sites were discovered by archaeologists last year.

The bodies will each be buried with full military honours at a new cemetery near the town.

Thousands of troops from both countries died in the 1916 battle of Fromelles, which began shortly after the Somme campaign was launched.

  1. My Grandfather, Alfred Edward Naunton, who belonged to the 5th Dorsetshire Regiment went missing in action on Jan 11, 1917. His name is on the Theipval Memorial. I have documents in my possession regarding the battle in which he went missing and follow-up letters to my grandmother. I am searching for more information.
    Thanks
