Chinese-Jamaican Traces the Family to Hong Kong.

The following teaser is from an article posted August 6, 2016 at jamaicans.com.

Chinese-Jaimacan_family_300pw

Gaia Goffe of New York, her sister Tao Leigh Goffe, and her mother Judith Hugh-Goffe embarked on a journey to China looking for a greater understanding of her complex family history. Gaia Goffe was born in Britain, raised in the United States, and is of Chinese and Afro-Jamaican ancestry. Gaia and her sister, a university lecturer and expert in the Afro-Asian experience in the Americas, and her mother, a pediatrician, feared they would not be accepted in China because they were not “full Chinese.” This had been the experience of “half Chinese” or black Chinese people in Jamaica, where her mother grew up.

Chinese Immigration to the United States, 1882-1944 Digital Archive

University of California, Berkeley has launched a new digital archive covering Chinese immigration to the United States between 1884-1944.

Chinese-Immigration-329p

“From 1882 to 1943 the United States Government severely curtailed immigration from China to the United States. This Federal policy resulted from concern over the large numbers of Chinese who had come to the United States in response to the need for inexpensive labor. Congress passed several laws restricting their immigration and naturalization. In its efforts to regulate these matters, the Congress also established federal agencies that created documentation related to those activities and its management of those people under the existing legislation. This website provides an overview of that history and offers an online, searchable index to many of the nearly 200,000 ‘casefiles’ held at NARA which cover the era of the Chinese Exclusion Act (1880-1943).”

HONG KONG (CNN) — Yet another passenger ship could be about to anchor in Hong Kong’s popular waters, but berths aboard this particular vessel will be more permanent.

New sketches from a company in the city on China’s southern coast have proposed the creation of a floating cemetery. Designed as a possible solution to Hong Kong’s shortage building space — particularly for graveyards – Bread Studio has come up with “Floating Eternity.”

The structure would hold a rotating wall of 370,000 niches which are compartments allotted for people to place their urn containing the remains of their loved ones. Designed like a cruise ship, the floating cemetery would anchor along Hong Kong’s coastline, docking at a designated pier for visitors who want to visit their deceased relatives.
